21 Facts about Countertops, or something like it
Being in the countertop business for several months now, I have learned so much. I went from basically knowing nothing to still not knowing some countertops facts but having a much better understanding to where I feel confident in helping others understand and decide their material.
This is where I started: I knew that laminate (which I didn’t even know the name of) are not my thing, marble is pretty in sculptures and granite is in just about every kitchen I knew. That’s a wrap.
And now, this is where I am.
21 things I have learned working in the countertop industry:
- Quartz and Quartzite… not the same thing. I wrote a post all about different materials and what you should know about them : “Which Countertop material to use.”
- The reason Quartz is the craze at the moment is because it is low maintenance and the most durable countertop material.
- Granite hasn’t died out not just because of style, but because it does the best with heat.
- Marble really is only good for looks and cool temperature since it is so soft.
- Two slab yards might have the same type of stone with the same name and everything, but it could look very different, especially if it’s a natural stone because… well nature.
- Quartz really isn’t that new of a product, even though it is reaching it’s peak today.
- You can walk through any slab yard at any time like it’s an art show and simply ask to look and no one will pressure you.
- White Quartz is even more “in” than you’d think.
- It might cost more but the price is worth the quality and longevity.
- A thicker edge makes a really big difference, preferably mitered .
- A mitered edge is when two slanted edges are glued together so the seam hits the corner and is very hidden.
- This is one project that without knowing exactly where someone got the countertop, you can’t get the exact Pinterest picture reference look. Especially if it’s a natural stone.
- If you want a matte finish you aren’t limited to an already honed product, you can have a fabricator do it for you (and vice versa with polished).
- Oh yah … And there are different finishes.
- There are different slab sizes mostly differing with the type of stone but sometimes you will need a seam.
- Your countertops both, throughout your house and even just in your kitchen, do not have to match. Your island could be a totally different color than your outer tops.
- Not one or the other, You can do a 4″ backsplash of countertop AND a tile, stone or wood backsplash and it will look beautiful.
- Technically you should only wash most any countertop surface with soap and water to avoid any damage.
- The countertop business has changed dramatically in the last 100 years and is constantly advancing thanks to technology.
- Materials can be so hard you have to use a wet tile saw.
- The process isn’t as simple as, “cut and done”. There is planning, templating, cutting and “sanding” like fabrication, which all takes more than one tool, and then the installation. Long hour days of work go into a beautiful handcrafted countertop.
Now tell me, was there any countertops facts in here that you didn’t know? Or am I the only one who really didn’t know much at all about countertops. Either way, I am excited to learn so much more. The more I learn and study countertops, the more I appreciate them and build my opinions. Hopefully this article helped you in some little way. I would love to be able to help you more through your countertop process. You can comment or email me any questions or concerns: sales@itscountertops.com Thanks for stopping by!
